Octopus begin small. At just five inches tall, this young one moved carefully from kelp leaf to kelp leaf across the sandy bottom in twenty feet of water off Vancouver Island. It paused when it noticed me, lifting slightly as it weighed its next move. For a few quiet moments we watched each other before it slipped back under cover and disappeared into the kelp.
