About the image
Octopus, a diver favourite in cold Pacific waters, are typically reclusive and spend much of their time hidden away in their dens. Divers will dedicate entire dives trying to find them, looking for that telltale sign of a scattering of shells and then hoping for a glimpse of an arm or an eye… if anybody is home. Capturing a decent underwater photograph of one is notoriously difficult.
On this wall dive off of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, the seeker became the sought when a giant Pacific octopus left its den and jetted up through the water column, sneaking up on my dive buddy, Rob, from behind. The interaction lasted only seconds as the octopus grabbed onto Rob, examined him and then retreated into a crack in the wall. Watching this interaction unfold, silhouetted against winter sunlight remains one of my most memorable diving moments.
