About the Image: The Emerald Princess, Powell River
The Emerald Princess, known colloquially as “The Mermaid”, is a 9-foot bronze sculpture by Simon Morris installed in Saltery Bay near Powell River, British Columbia, in 1989. It rests in approximately 60 feet of water and, while diving tourism in the area has declined, continues to be visited by divers. A second sculpture by the same artist, Amphitrite, was installed in the Cayman Islands in October 2000. I was very lucky to have about 80 feet of visibility this day.

Sitting quietly below the surface in coastal Pacific waters, the sculpture has become home to a range of marine life. Tube worms and anemones attach themselves to the structure, nudibranchs move across its surface, and an octopus den is often occupied beneath it.
