About the image: Sea Lion And Diver (Black & White)
California sea lions are often encountered on crowded haul outs along the Pacific coast, where their noise and numbers dominate the shoreline. Underwater they are silent, graceful and fast.

On a winter dive in the Malaspina Strait, this sea lion slipped quietly down from the surface to join us at a depth of 80 feet. With effortless control, it swam around us, its large, powerful body dwarfing our own as it studied us from a cautious distance before darting in for a closer pass. The water was clear enough that we could follow its journey from the surface to us and back again before it returned once more.
Encounters like this are a reminder that underwater, we are visitors,  observed as closely as we observe.
